AMD only for Linux Users June 26, 2026 at 07:04 PM
On Linux, AMD RX series GPUs are generally considered a superior, more hassle-free choice compared to Nvidia RTX cards. This isn't just about raw performance; it's about a fundamentally different driver philosophy that deeply impacts the user experience . Here’s the breakdown of why, based on the most critical issues and use cases: 🐧 The Driver Philosophy: Open vs. Proprietary The core of the issue lies in how each company handles Linux drivers. · AMD: "In the Kernel" Experience . AMD's amdgpu driver is open-source and integrated directly into the Linux kernel. This means it "just works" out-of-the-box with most modern distros. You don't need to manually install anything; the GPU is detected and functional immediately after the OS installation. This rock-solid support makes it ideal for users who want a stable, plug-and-play experience. · Nvidia: A Proprietary Struggle. Nvidia's primary Linux driver is proprietary and installed separately from the kernel . This creates ongoing friction: · Complexity & Breakage: A routine kernel or system update can easily break the Nvidia driver, leading to a black screen or failed boot, a common headache for Nvidia users . · RTX 50 Series Quirks: The new Blackwell GPUs (RTX 50 series) require Nvidia's open-source kernel modules. Users have reported serious stability issues and crashes with these, especially when using specialized kernels like PREEMPT_RT for low-latency audio work . 🎮 Real-World Performance in Games Benchmarks have shown that AMD's integration leads to surprising performance advantages in Linux gaming. · AMD Wins (Sometimes Unexpectedly): In tests on the gaming-focused Bazzite Linux distro, the Radeon RX 9070 XT outperformed the more expensive RTX 5080 in titles like Black Myth: Wukong and Cyberpunk 2077 . In Starfield, the flagship RTX 5090 was beaten by both the RX 9070 XT and the RX 9070 . · AMD Gaining Ground in Ray Tracing: While ray tracing was once a clear Nvidia strength, the open-source RADV driver for AMD has seen massive performance gains in 2025, making it far more competitive in Vulkan ray-tracing benchmarks . 🛠️ Specific Use Cases & Issues · 💻 New Linux Users: AMD is the clear winner for a "plug-and-play" experience. You can install Linux on an AMD system and have graphics working immediately, without troubleshooting driver installations from the command line . · 🎮 Gamers on Linux: AMD provides more consistent and stable performance in a wider range of game titles, avoiding the performance anomalies seen with Nvidia cards . · 🎧 Audio Professionals and Creators: For tasks requiring a PREEMPT_RT (real-time) kernel for ultra-low latency, Nvidia's open-source modules for RTX 50 series are currently unstable. This makes AMD the safer choice for professional audio workstations . · 🧪 Cutting-Edge Users: Users on rolling-release distros (like Arch) are more susceptible to Nvidia driver breakage after updates. AMD's in-kernel driver is far more resilient and less likely to cause problems after a system upgrade . --- In short, for a Linux user who values stability, ease of use, and reliable performance, an AMD RX GPU is very often the better choice. Nvidia's raw power is undermined by the friction, potential for breakage, and surprising performance losses of its Linux driver stack .

Yes for gaming, spending less as much as possible while having more performance is right but people don't buy NVIDIA GPU for just gaming, it's everything a PC supposed to do,such as animation, Studio workloads, modeling,Asset creation and which justifies Thier GPU price

Adnan, "Justify" is not the verb I would use, it's more like "force", they're forcing the people who need it for work to pay $400 extra just for the NGreedia features, which at that point just save some more and buy a 5080

Weighed my options and decided that spending $749 was muich easier to stomach than over $1k+ for a 5070ti. that, and Nvidia ditching their customers for AI slop made it easy for me to go AMD. im sure AMD isnt much better, but im happy with my purchase. I tried out raytracing for the first time and now i truly get why people spend so much for it. Sure the 5070ti could do better in raytracing, but im extremely happy with what i got.

I just got the 9070 XT Sapphire Pulse 3x, paid it "only" 688 €, for now I can say that I am more than satisfied I came from an RTX 3080 and the performance leap is remarkable, I would have preferred to continue with GeForce GPUs but the price played in favor of AMD, with the hope that over time they will further extend support for FSR4 and improve AI compute performance for better handling of ray and path tracing.

For pure gaming purposes, the AMD Radeon 9070 is the better cost-effective option. For gaming and work purposes, the Nvidia RTX 5070 TI is the better choice.

I purchased last week my 5070 Ti inno3D 3x fan, for 769 € is actual the best deal imo Very solid raster performances and very good RT better than 9070 XT and at the moment I'm not even activating dlss, for me at this price is the best gpu futureproof.

If youra looking just for gaming go with AMD, if youre interested in studio render, Machine Learning, AI, Physics calculations, Tensor jobs etc. Nvidia might be a better choice but you have to catch a discount etc. prices are really high.

The launch prices on here are wrong, skewing the value proposition. The AMD card is $599 and is available at that price. The nVidia card is $749 but is mostly not available under $900. It's very unlikely that the nVidia card prices will come down to MSRP anytime soon, if ever. And the fact that the 9070xt trades blows with the 5070ti ina actual, real-world tests means that the AMD card is much better value.

I feel like although the 5070ti is a lot more powerful and have a lot more software advantages then AMD, but with the market how it is, and with the 9070 XT it costs up to 400$-450$ less then some of the 5070ti cards... I say it's more worth it right now that if you're building a mid-tier build, you get a 9070 XT and you upgrade in a years' time when the market is more stable, sell the 9070 XT and upgrade to a 4070 super or 4080 card, or a 5080 if they fix the melting cable situation

AMD is simply falling too far behind in the technology involved with GPU's. While the 9070 xt is a decent card it is not even close technologically to the 5070 ti. As the drivers and DLSS etc improve they will fall further behind. The 9070 xt is a better comparison to the vanilla 5070 which also benefits from the Nvidia software.

Umochi, Yes, if they just keep going and possibly add MFG and improve on FSR, then it will become a viable option. Right now, it's still too behind for me. Although Nvidias are massively overpriced right now, so I wouldn't get one anyways.

Why did they have to do this when nvidia gets more graphics cards into the market there will be no point buying 9070 xt when they have similar prices then 9070 xt will have no buyers and just like last gen the prices of amd will go down. Couldn't they just start with the cheaper price for getting a chunk of the market share? Nopeeeeee 🤦

The radeon rx 9070 xt may have better value for money. But in case of raw performance, rtx 5070 ti is much more powerful. So i voted for the 5070 ti.
