Compare MediaTek Dimensity 8400 with other SoCs
Benchmarks
Performance tests in popular benchmarks
AnTuTu 11
The AnTuTu Benchmark measures CPU, GPU, RAM, and I/O performance in different scenarios
Dimensity 8500 should be like this:
They should jump to TSMC's N3E node for the SoC instead of using N4P again unless they can iterate in other areas of the SoCs in a good way without becoming worse than 8400 especially when it comes to efficiency.
I think Cortex-A725 are actually great CPU cores but should not up the clock speed more than 3.5 GHz in 8500 for the prime core, rest of 3+4 core cluster should be fine staying the same as 8400's, probably.
GPU though…
Mali-G725 MP8 at 1.5 GHz (EUs/Pipelines: 8 cores, I mean)
They already have Bluetooth 6.0 on 8400 so update WiFi to WiFI 7 for 8500.
It'll probably be a good generational update to 8500, then. Probably…
I hope MediaTek will stay as pragmatic for 8500 when it comes to efficiency as they are for 8400 again…
By the way, Smartphone manufacturers are sleeping on D8400… Only 3 Chinese smartphone manufacturers used it on their devices… There's also D8450 (o_o) which is on Oppo's smartphones. Probably Oneplus and Motorola will use 8450 next year. D8400 will be a great SoC for Android tablets, actually, where are they… Anyways, hope MediaTek stops this refresh strategy next gen… No more same things with different/marketing names.
Hope MediaTek don't repeat D9400e (D9300+) (o_o) and D8450 (D8400) (o_o) type of thing again for next gen, be lazy and recycle stuff. MediaTek is doing that a lot with D7300 right now. They recently announced D7360 which is just D7300. (o_o)
Also I wish MediaTek are more clear when it comes to video decode support… They support 4K60 hardware decode for H.264 (AVC), H.265 (HEVC), VP9 and AV1 but are they 10-bit decode supported or not? Since 8400 is a consumer SoC, it only supports 4:2:0 chroma subsampling which is fine. Also, just recently found out H.264 10-bit hardware decode is rare, only Apple SoCs and Nvidia's Blackwell GPUs support it, apparently. Intel, AMD GPUs and even Qualcomm's X series laptop chips don't support H.264 10-bit hardware accelerated decode. I have no idea about MediaTek's. I wish I didn't notice this stuff, lol. I'm unnecessarily paying more attention to them now than needed.
fuuk1, Oh right, how could I've forgotten about AI in the checklist? Make the NPU have 35 TOPS of performance, I guess…

based off the currently known info, it will stick to 4nm litography process and use arm immortalis g720 mp12 (rumored antutu is around 2mil, lines up with this info, using dimensity 9300 as a reference).
fuuk1, @fuuk1: “supports 4:2:0 chroma subsampling”
I rarely see this in internet, let me tell my part. around 2018/9 I torrent a 1080p anime. It was bigger then usual then when I watch it things look weird, those ant-block pixel that look like corrupted file, sound out of pitch. I then download regular 1080p one then compare. The only difference? 4:2:2!! chroma subsampling!
Hyoroemon, Probably a bad encode on that anime part, it might've actually been a corrupted file as you said. Videos on the internet use 4:2:0 chroma subsampling because it takes less space, ultimately. The only ones that use 4:2:2 chroma subsampling video is in production stuff, like in professional workflows.

The sections: Mali and Immortalis are different. I've noticed that this page always mixes up the names.
They should correct that: the Mali series is one and the Immortalis series is another. In Graphics, it says Mali-G720 MP7, but it's Immortalis G720 MP7. They're confusing people by giving the wrong name. Please correct it.

You can literally check it on the official website it's Mali
You are the only one thats confused.
FYI, Immortalis-G720 can't be configured with less than 10 cores.

Immortalis has Ray tracing support.that mean they use more Cores for better ray tracing performance.
Ray tracing on 'Mali' GPUs optional.
Mali G720 MC7 is a lite version of Immortalis G720 MP12

Insted of using arm architecture in both of the processors, apple design their own processors according to their needs and additionaly they optimize their applications according to the designed processors for best of the best compatibility.
That's how they are able to beat higher power processors than them.

Is d8400 support ray tracing as when I check on many areas they tell that d8400 don't has important hardware to support ray tracing
+70Reply
PVzzzMarch 9, 2025 at 07:48 AM
Arm's 5th Gen GPU configuration requires at least 10 cores to have the Immortalis branding and hardware ray tracing.
+13Reply
fuuk1March 10, 2025 at 08:53 PM
I found out that only Immortalis GPUs support ray tracing, not Mali GPUs. Immortalis GPUs are used in Flagship SoCs. So, no, 8400 doesn't support it.

Actually, it does. In GSMArena's test, it ran the Solar Bay stress test(X7 Pro), which is a clear indicator of Ray tracing support.
Whether it is hardware or software, I don't know. But it definitely does support ray tracing.

fuuk1, Bruhh you can check the mediatek page of the Dimensity 8400.. It literally says IMMORTALIS GPU
mediatek gladiator, Yeah, about that...
It was listed as a MALI GPU. Specifically, the Mali G720 MC7
In case anyone's wondering why the confusion, I did some research and found that architecture aside, the GPU for the 8400 shares almost the same name with the Immortalis G720 MC12 in the 9300
It supports "ray query " ray tracing but it is not hardware accelerated. Support for ray tracing is "optional" on non immortalis gpus

I think it would be better if it were a 4+4 configuration (4 Cortex-A725 3.0GHz/3.2Ghz and 4 Cortex-A725 2.4GHz/2.2GHz), this single prime core at 3,25GHz is totally dispensable.

This cores are big only, adding up more clock speed risks thermal issues.. just look at the SD8sGen-Elite it has 8x A720 cores and is riddled with terrible thermal throttling problems not sure if software update can fix it because the Software update can just lessen the maximum Frequency Cpu in needed circumstances
Messier83, I agree, it's preferable to have a smaller clock, is more stable, I was just thinking about the fact that the chip has a single core running at 3.25Ghz, MediaTek could decrease that to 3.0Ghz and add one more, in a 2+6 architecture, maybe in 8500/8600.

Why are you commenting without proper knowledge?
8 mid cores will significantly boost low and mid performance with the highest efficiency.
Low and mid efficiency and performance are required for 95% of the time.
Everyone also did that with the D7300; that chip has 4 mid and 4 efficiency cores, which impact a lot. Also, I know that GPU was a downgrade against the D7200, but that chip also came at a cheaper price, which makes it value for money.
But every tech YouTuber without knowledge, like you, said it is a downgrade and rebranding of the D7200.
How is it a rebranding? D7200 is 2+6, and D7300 is 4+4.

Snapdragon 8 s elite clears this processor, blah blah. Then d9400 & 8 elite too clears it. It ain't about what is better, rather at what price it arrives. It is arriving with 25% more performance & 40 % more efficiency than Dimensity 8300 costing just $10 more ( around 110), while as 8s gen 3 was already $20 more pricier than 8300, & 8s elite will surely be $10 more pricier than 8s gen 3.
So u should post price as well.
8300 - $100- $110
8400 - $110-$120
8s gen 3 - $120-$130
8s elite - $ 130-$140

Why are the scores here so unusually low...?

First, because this SoC uses 8 big cores, its performance is strong enough, which means it will consume energy and generate a lot of heat. Therefore, it will have a mechanism to restrain the cores to protect the SoC.
Second, because it reduces performance, the score will be reduced.
Third, the score here is the average of the results of volunteers providing their results, so it depends on the data they provide.
In short, the score of 8400 is low because it is not optimized as well as other flaship smartphone, but MediaTek mainly targets mid-range smartphone.
Besides, the Antutu score is only for reference in relation to the different operations of the chips. What is important is that we feel that it is perfectly suitable for our needs, suitable for the amount of money we spend to own it, suitable for the Smartphone that you can (or not) own and use it.

Obviously, MediaTek wants to take advantage over Snapdragon's upcoming 8s series this time around. Their official site states that the GPU is G720 MP7. Normally, the 8000 series only uses the new mid-range G600 series, but this time it seems that it uses fewer cores than the high-end GPU used in the Dimensity 9300. The new cores in the CPU are also used in the All big cores design, so we are going to see competition with the latest 8s series.
