I have done a comparison on zalith launcher, obviously the 8 gen 3 is better than 8s gen 4, but the performance difference is super small, only 87fps vs 98fps average on shaders, the 8 gen 3 has fewer stutters, which is reasonable since the turnip drivers on zalith launcher are for adreno 6xx and 7xx, so if the 8s gen 4 becomes more optimized, there's a slight chance that it might even be 1:1 with the 8 gen 3. adreno 8xx architecture is no joke, anyways if you're on a budget and needs gaming performance, always go for 8s gen 4, unless you can spend more for the 8 gen 3 but its not really worth it unless you need it not just for gaming

"Numbers don’t lie. After comparing 3DMark and PCMark results, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 clearly outperforms the 8s Gen 4 in both raw GPU power and daily efficiency tasks (especially photo editing and web browsing). For a student or a gamer, the with the 8 Gen 3 is the superior choice. Don't let the 'Gen 4' name fool you; the 's' version is a cut-down variant. If they are the same price, going for the flagship 8 Gen 3 is a no-brainer for better longevity and performance.

🥷Dont forget the price here, 8s gen 4 is no way same price as 8 gen 3, its insane how 8s gen 4 competing almost neck to neck to 8 gen 3 for its price, the bench mark is lower because most of the samples came from redmi turbo 4 pro which has stupid thermal. Well over all 8s gen 4 is not a weak processor, its even known as one of the most insane value for its performance

Riskyboom, You've got a solid point about the price gap. In the mid-range segment, the 8s Gen 4 is definitely a value king, especially for those on a strict budget. My argument was mainly focused on users who prioritize peak stability and GPU overhead for high-end gaming. If someone can find a discounted 8 Gen 3 flagship, it's still the safer bet for long-term performance, but I can't deny that the 8s Gen 4 is shaking up the market

GPU-wise, 8 Gen3, being a flagship, is definitely more powerful with more cores/pipelines than 8s Gen4. Also, 8 Gen3 can record and output up to 8K, while 8s Gen4 supports up to only 4K. So gaming is much better on the flagship SoC. Winlator also runs much better emulating PC games. CPU looks to be more on the 8s Gen4 since it doesn't have efficiency cores like 8 Gen3, which means it'll run hotter and drain more battery when using CPU-heavy tasks.

On average, I think the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is slightly better than the 8s Gen 4 in terms of gaming. So, if performance is all you care about, go for the OnePlus 13R. However, if performance-to-price ratio is your priority, I’d recommend the iQOO Neo 10 since its performance is nearly the same but at a lower price.

I like the F7 Pro model slightly more, as i consider 8 Gen 3 a purebreed flagship, but the 8s Gen 4 is newer and similar in performance. If u want a full flagship spec without missing the slightest details, 8gen3 should be your pick but if you're budget constraint while looking for flagship performance then the 8sgen4 is your pick. They're almost identical in performance and efficiency with little to no difference. Even the 8sgen4 is a flagship SoC with flagship grade performance but the 8gen3 is just pure breed flagship with better camera. The choice is yours

I think the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 shouldn’t be more powerful than the 8 Gen 3. Of course, you might be wondering why I’m saying this. Let me explain with these points: 1. Chip cost As we all know, a new chip should be cheaper than the older one and not more powerful. 2. A new chip doesn't always mean it's better (This applies to all brands.) 3. That's all. I'm too lazy to type more.

Wait at least several months before buying 8s gen 4 phones. The battery consumption is way too high with even 7000mah batteries, so either wait and see if optimization is needed or buy 8 gen 3.

Snapdragon 8 gen 3 has only 256 shading units? How is that possible?
Avatar

8 Gen 3 has a total of 1536. Look at the total amount not the "shading units section" as it only shows the amount per compute unit. Adreno 700 series has 256 per CU, so that's 6 x 256 = 1536. Meanwhile, the Adreno 800 has 128 per CU.The 8s Gen 4 has 2 GPU slices each with 4 CU. So that's 8 x 128 = 1024.

People need to understand that 8s series are not meant to compete with 8+ or 8 counterparts, the are simply power efficient processors (Equivalent to intels ultra low voltage chips in laptops) The 8s g4 sits between 8 gen 3 and 8 elite 1 and closes the gap between, for a mid to upper mid range phone you can't ask for a more perfect deal, it has power to do everything at the same time efficiently People need to remember that the 8s will be always outclassed by the elite /8+/8 chips this time it outclassed the gen 3 and 2 because of shift in architecture of chip, I bet the 8s gen 5 will be inferior to the then flagship and 8 elite 2/1 These are made with price in mind and not as flagship. I will actually prefer a 8s over 8 due to power efficiency, I rarely play anything from play store and most of my games are ps and switch emulations And 8s shines due to longer battery efficiency and sufficient power It will never outrun other 8 series but it can hold its ground. Please keep that in mind when deciding which chip you want in your next phone, what type of apps you want to run, the work load, SoT you want, your traveling times., future plans etc Also don't be afraid of brand jumping, a Samsung model will never have the required 8 series processor you want at the price you want That doesn't mean you shouldn't switch to a different model from a different company if it's better in every aspect and of same/less price.

From my experience I can say that 8 gen 3 is still better than 8s gen 4,but in a very little margin. In terms of cpu and gpu, 8 gen 3 still has more clock speed in all big cores. 8s gen 4 has all big cores, but cortex A720 at 2.02 GHz is literally of no need.Cause A520 runs small tasks smoothly with saving battery.I think they put those A720 at 2.02 GHz only to match the cpu power and score. Therefore,I think cpu of 8 gen 3 is still better.(as it has more clock speed and big-little core cluster balanced)*A520 really saves battery. In terms of gpu, adreno 750 is again slightly better than the adreno 825.In every section like gaming, rendering 750 wins at a little margin. Verdict:8s gen 4 and 8 gen 3 are almost same in both cpu and gpu but 8 gen 3 is better (2%~5%)

a7med May 17, 2025 at 09:35 AM
I understand you. In gaming, that's two A720s at 2GHz that won't be used, and an A520 won't be used also in 8 Gen 3. The sum is the big 6 cores will be used in gaming, and 8 Gen 3 has more clocks on all big 6 cores.

a7med, Yes,thanks for understanding. It’s qualcomm's tactics. You may remember when 8s gen 3 was launched, it was known to be better than 8 gen 2,but in long run,it was defeated by 8 gen 2.Though 8s gen 3 has better core of cpu,it could not managed to beat the 8 gen 2

a7med, The number of shaders alone doesn’t determine real-world gaming performance. For exemple, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has the same 1536 shaders as the 8 Gen 3, yet it performs significantly worse than the 8s Gen 4 in actual gaming benchmarks. According to tests by Geekerwan, a well-respected source in chip analysis, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4, with fewer shaders (1024), delivers GPU performance on par with or even better than the 8 Gen 3 in demanding workloads like 3DMark Steel Nomad Light. It also shows far better efficiency per watt. This proves that more shaders ≠ better performance. What's more important is the GPU architecture, clock speeds, memory bandwidth, and thermal efficiency, and in those areas, the 8s Gen 4 clearly beats the 8 Gen 2 and goes toe-to-toe with the 8 Gen 3 in real-world gaming scenarios.

Contrary to claims, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is not a chipset with the potential to outperform the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Specifically, its smaller L3 cache on the CPU side compared to the 8 Gen 3 (8 MB vs 12 MB) drags the chip into a terrible position regarding efficiency. Qualcomm's adopted "all big core" architecture hasn't been enough to close this gap, because the Cortex-A720 is a mid-to-high-end core from last year. For example, the CPU unit of the MediaTek Dimensity 8400 is in a more advantageous position regarding its performance-per-watt ratio, as it utilizes an architecture composed entirely of A725 cores. The 8s Gen 4's sole supposed advantage is inheriting its GPU architecture from the flagship [Snapdragon 8 Elite], but even this isn't a clear win because the Adreno 830 [GPU in 8 Elite] has been significantly cut down in virtually every aspect. Therefore, while power consumption drops, efficiency also suffers. The initial sources focus on comparisons involving the Dimensity 8400, the 8s Gen 4, and other devices equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. These conclusions are drawn from observing performance in synthetic benchmarks and games. Likewise, when the Poco F7 is released, you will understand much better why the F7 Pro uses the 8 Gen 3 while the standard F7 uses the 8s Gen 4. The situation between the 8s Gen 4 and 8 Gen 3 this year is expected to be even worse than the situation between the 8s Gen 3 and 8 Gen 2 last year. Marcos, This video is based solely on data provided by Qualcomm, meaning it was made using a prototype device with the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. The video is informative, but since it relies on company-provided data, it does not reflect real-world experiences. You should watch the Geekerwan channel to gain insights into microarchitectures—not to learn about the final states of the chips or their specific advantages over each other. To do that, you need a fresh and objective test that is entirely independent of what the companies themselves provide. And here is another video—filmed just today by YouTuber Cupu—that fully confirms what I’ve said: https://youtu.be/gXTcxP-jL9w

It's just as powerful as 8gen3, and in most cases, you won't even notice the difference in performance unless you run benchmark tests. The performance is more than enough to play any games at the highest settings. I just hope it doesn't throttle as much as 8gen3; seeing that it has a lower clock speed, it should run cooler than the 8gen3 theoretically, since its architecture is similar to it. Though I am kinda disappointed that the Adreno 825 is weaker than 8gen3. I believe if they used 8selite, they'd have made 8sgen4 more powerful than the 8gen3. Too bad we got 8sgen4 instead of 8selite. It seems like they won't be using "elite" on midrange chips and is reserved for the flagship chips.
